In 2020-22, we created a multidisciplinary theatre performance that transformed the comic "Un monde en pieces" of Ulysse & Gaspard Gry from 2D to 3D.
To accompany this project we have designed an interactive book that takes its audience through sound recordings, videos, photography and text, and drops them in the chess city of New Ebony!

    The shape of the book
The pages of the book contain only part of the story. It is the QR codes on the
pages that give access to the multimedia content. The QR codes are linked to videos and sound recordings that place the viewer in the middle of the story.

Welcome to New Ebony, a chess city!

The main language of the book is Dutch with a few extracts in English

Lyrics rap song by D3 written and performed by Gerindo Kartadinata in collaboration with K&A for CHANGE THE GAME: Your whole life is DADA. DADA. DADA. Your whole life is DADA. DADA MAN You vote for parties that claim to save you, from what they put on the road. You think that your voting influences what really matters. You get excited aboutwhat the media tells you to get excited about. You’re not surprised that they all write the same. You believe it.Because the news speaker said so. A pawn with a problem of orientationYou talk about ‘PIECE/PEACE values’, while the next military intervention is underway. You believe in the demonisation of foreign boardgames. DADA MAN. You call it peace, what we are living in. Have some more black sugar into your fancy cappuccino. No, your children are not part of the overpopulation. They are adorable, little angels. The pieces, you consider superfluous are the refugees, the pawns, who do your shit work for low wages, the pieces, who are fucked by the global gamble. You have nothing to do with it. Who cares?

Lyrics song by N°5 written by Alexandra Bellon, performed by Annelie Koning in collaboration with K&A for CHANGE THE GAME: Fear is like wild grass. Fear is like wild grass. Fear is like wild grass... In between the squares, this grass is rising. Can you hear it? Fear is like wild grass. Fear is like wild grass. Fear is like wild grass. Gardeners feed the wild, and’ make it to grow in between the squares. Can you bear it? Fear is like wild grass. Fear is like wild grass. Fear is like wild grass. Guardians lost their jobs! Mind the gap, the king needs you. I’m back after an Odyssée.

about

Digital tracks of SIDE A & B of the vinyl containing the music version of the soundtrack of CHANGE THE GAME (multidisciplinary theater performance)
To be listened with headphones (binaural recording)

About the project:
In the theater performance CHANGE THE GAME the audience is immersed into the world of New-Ebony through a three dimensional sound design. Composed by K&A and recorded in collaboration with David Poissonnier, a true sonic architect, they sculpt the world of these pieces and pawns. They use a binaural recording technique, that allows 360° sound reproduction around the listener through headphones (including sound localization horizantally & vertically). Through their headphones the audience will hear the metro passing by from right to left, the footsteps of the crazy ones surrounding the knights, the jingle of the morning Chess-Radio emissions, the hoofs of the knights galloping on the pavements, the drumming tensions and the thoughts of a manipulating politician. This 3D soundtrack uses cinematographic tools (foley-effects, voice over & sound design) to move its audience out of their seat and drop them in the middle of a square. A guide that takes the audience through New Ebony: you arrive inside the game, inside the actions, inside the characters.
The track you are listening to right now is the music version of the soundtrack (without the theater text)

Alexandra Bellon about the composition:
“My composition is based on percussion. Drums and binaural field recordings are the central elements and the skeleton of this composition. The core lies in the performative possibilities of “talking drums”, which were used as a communication system for centuries in Africa. This “rhythmic language” forms the base of the inspiration to compose “drumming tensions”. The composition is based on the repetition of patterns, and their slow/brusque transformation. I am interested in change by chance: a mistake in repetition. I composed relying on unpredictability. With the influence of the melodic drumming of T. Williams and the electric pulse flow of T. Allen. Rhythm is perceived as the heartbeat of the piece and tempos as activators of emotions:
slow: apparent calmness
medium: to activate the beats
fast: intensity at its maximum
This composition designs a landscape of tensions.”

about

K&A Geneva, Switzerland

K&A, formed by Karla Isidorou & Alexandra Bellon, is a dazzling duo. Together they build projects & concepts that arise out of long periods of research. Torrent books, vagary images, deserting writings, performative actions, grinding sounds, poetical and socio-political contexts come together to create a complex philosophical environment in which the statement of each project is formed. ... more
